2018 Kilimanjaro Marathon in Tanzania

Kilimanjaro

The amazing Andy Sharpe has added another date to his 2018 fundraising diary for Tanyel’s Smile – the Kilimanjaro Marathon in Tanzania.

Situated south of the equator – in Tanzania – at 5 895 metres, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the highest free standing mountain in the world (as it is not part of a mountain range).  Huge permanent glaciers flow down from the summit, and the sheer presence of this huge mountain dominates the entire area. An icon in Africa, “Kili“ as she is affectionately known, is one of the sights every person should see at least once in his or her life.

Every year, at the end of February/beginning March, a standard 42.2 km marathonis held in the town of Moshi, Tanzania. This race has been set up to promote the sport in Tanzania, and has the official backing of the Tanzania Tourist Board, the Tanzania Amateur Athletics Association, the IAAF, and is registered with AIMS.

This year’s event is on March 4th 2018 and event information can be found here http://www.kilimanjaromarathon.com

Let’s hope Andy takes his factor 50!

A Big Thank You to Ilkley

Tanyel Mug

A big thank from the team and from Andy Sharpe to everyone who donated to money at the fundraising event in Ilkley.  A brilliant £215 was raised for Tanyel’s Smile.

We’d also like to thank Andy for his overwhelming support for the charity.  In addition to the recent heroic events Andy will be running the 2018 Kilimanjaro Marathon in Tanzania (see https://www.tanyelssmile.org.uk/2017/10/11/2018-kilimanjaro-marathon-in-tanzania/.)

It sounds exhausting just reading the title!

2017 Yorkshire Marathon

Good luck to Andy Sharpe who on Sunday 8th October will be running the Yorkshire Marathon.

Andy (pictured below) would like to thank Pendle Sportswear in Ilkley for creating his top free of charge.  It’s rather fetching I’m sure you’ll agree.

If you’d like to support Andy, donations can be made either through Tanyel’s Smile or on Andy’s Just Giving Page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/andrew-sharpe11

We know you won’t need it but Good Luck Andy!

Another Week, Another Marathon

Bournemouth Marathon Festival, 1 October 2016

This weekend (the 7th October 2017) Tanyel’s father Ceyhun will again be running the Bournemouth Marathon for Tanyel’s Smile.  This is the second heroic year he’ll be running along the coast (and the roads, and the pier) and we wish him well.

Hopefully the weather will be fine and the sea not too rough – we don’t want him to be washed away.  Any support you can provide will be greatly appreciated and donations can be made at http://www.justgiving.com/c-uzun2tanyelssmile

Good luck Cey, and thank you!

A High-Flying Thank You

Gualy Enjoying Flying

On Sunday 24th September we held a paragliding charity event, Flying High for Tanyel which, was attended by many family and friends. To date we’ve raised £1,375 for Tanyel’s Smile.

Well done to Tanyel’s mum Gulay who managed to fly after leaving her nerves behind on the ground. She’s done amazingly well, so brave!

We would like to thank all family and friends who have donated and attended to support this event. An extremely big thank you also goes to Highline Paragliding for their generous donation and to Smile Please Sidcup studios for providing all of the t-shirts and prints. We greatly appreciate your support

Great North (Dinosaur) Run

Great North Run

Andy Sharpe (pictured) is running this year’s Great North Run in his dinosaur outfit. Please give him all the support you can.

sees thousands of runners take on the half marathon challenge every year. Starting in Newcastle upon Tyne, the 13.1 mile course is lined with supporters all the way from the iconic Tyne Bridge, right out towards the coast in South Shields.

We’ve no idea how long Andy will take inside his humongous dinosaur outfit and we hope he’s not extinct before the end.  But for sure he’ll raise so many donations he’ll put a smile on  many children’s faces – Good Luck Andy

There’s only 20 days until the dinosaur participates in the 2017 Great North Run on behalf of Tanyel’s Smile. After surpassing the £25,000 fundraising mark for Clic Sargent (including Gift Aid), Andy has now switched all of his fundraising commitments to supporting Tanyel’s Smile.  As Andy said, “It’s been an incredible honour getting to know Tanyel’s parents during the past year, who sadly lost their beautiful daughter to Cancer in 2016. One of Tanyel’s final wishes was for a charity to be set up to help children and their families in Northern Cyprus through the trauma of Cancer.  I’m delighted to be able to help”.

If you’d like to offer your support to Andy, you can sponsor him here.

Marathon World Record

Scooby Doo Fancy Dress Team

Earlier this year Cey, Tanyel’s father, was part of a World Record breaking marathon team, which raised £100,000 for young children with Cancer.

Guinness World Records partnered with the Virgin Money London Marathon (VMLM) for the tenth consecutive year to provide costumed fun runners with on-the-spot world record verification when they crossed the finish line during the event on Sunday 23th April (see Virgin Marathon World Records).

Cey’s Scooby Doo team comprised five runners in the Mystery Machine and set the world record for the fastest marathon in a five-person costume. Cey, pictured, wore the long Scooby Doo ears – very fetching. Worryingly he’s still wearing them for work.

A fantastic effort by all.

Thanks to Quintin Kynaston

A very big thank you to the parents at Quintin Kynaston Academy for the £500 pounds they raised for Tanyel’s Smile.

Quintin Kynaston is a secondary school in St John’s Wood.  Tanyel’s dad, Ceyhun, works with the Academy providing support, insight and advice in his capacity as a Metropolitan Police Officer.

Thank you to everyone who helped.  We are extremely grateful for your support.

Tri Done – Cey Exhausted

Andrew and Cey

After many hours of gruelling training and 4 hours of hell on London’s roads, I’ve now completed my first Olympic-length triathlon.  My finishing time was an honourable 4:21 and I now look forward to reducing that next time around.

As I suspected, the swim leg was the most challenging and I was relieved to finish.  I got considerably wetter than I expected despite the fine weather.  I guess that’s the downside of swimming.  Luckily the cycling gave me plenty of time to dry.

Thank you to Andrew Sharpe (pictured) for joining me today, to everyone who came along to support me and to those who generously made donations to the charity.  I couldn’t do it without you and it’s great to be able to help children through their difficult times.

Thanks, Cey

London Triathlon

After successfully completing a number of marathons I thought it was time to face a new challenge, and on Sunday 23rd July I’ll be entering my first Triathlon.

Not believing in half-measures, I’ve entered the full Olympic event: 1km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run. Unsurprisingly my running training has been going reasonably well, as has the cycling; I am however not looking forward to the swimming – unfortunately I swim like a fish – one that’s been battered and served with chips.

Due to unforeseen delays,  the JustGiving site for Tanyel’s Smile is not ready just yet but please watch this space, if you’d like to make a small donation we should be with you soon.

Thank you, Cey
